(Ioana Iorgu is a Groeningen-based Dutch independent music producer, a self-taught guitarist and drummer. After experimenting with ambient music, Ioana kicked off a new chapter by honing her sound further, employing dissonant guitar riffs and thumping drum beats.

At the age of 14, while living in Malaysia, she was greatly inspired by her English teacher whom she played in a band with, and introduced her to some of her formative records. Ioana released her first instrumental album Silent Scream with songs she composed in 2015 and after that produced another EP, the shoegaze saturated Fiction. After experimenting with ambient music, Ioana kicked off a postpunk chapter employing dissonant guitar riffs, thumping bone-cold drum beats and spoken, unsettling vocals. The One You Left Behind is a collection of compositions which evolved organically with no particular style or genre in mind. The Crooked Spoke don’t hold back – dramatic effects and powerful emotions activate the senses. To them, escapism is no bad thing – it describes the dreamy journey they want to take you on.

 

The production of the music was an undeniably central to the The One You Left Behind. But the melody and composition remains at the music’s core. The melodies captivate and appeal but the often radical studio production magnifies the ambience; they did get help from a number of prominent collaborators including Claus Hempler, whose smooth and timeless vocals grace the album’s title song. The singer Maria Laurette Friis (Tys Tys) contributes her unforgettable voice to the track Black Tower Hotel with guitarist Per Moellehoej’s dream-like gypsy-jazz solo floating below as a melodic counterpart).
